Deluge appeared in 2006 as a lightweight, open alternative to commercial torrent clients, and it still follows that idea: no ads, no bundled offers, and a small core that you extend with plugins when you need more. The heavy lifting is done by libtorrent, a widely used BitTorrent library, while the interface and logic are written in Python. A distinctive feature is its client-server design. Deluge can run as a background service on one machine, for example a home server or NAS, while you control it from a desktop interface, a web interface or the command line on another device. For a single Windows PC you simply use the standard mode, where all of this stays out of sight. The interface is available in many languages. Releases are not frequent, and version 2.2.0 came after almost three years, so do not expect rapid changes; the project values stability over new features.
Deluge runs on Windows and does not need a powerful PC. Disk space depends on what you download. Allow the program through the Windows firewall for better connectivity.
Deluge itself is clean when downloaded from the official site or its GitHub repository. Files you get through torrents are another matter: scan them, and avoid executable files from unknown sources. Sharing copyrighted content without permission is illegal in many countries, and your IP address is visible to other peers.
Set a separate folder for incomplete downloads so that unfinished files do not mix with finished ones. Limit upload speed slightly below your connection’s maximum; a saturated upload slows down browsing for everyone at home. Browse the list of bundled plugins before looking for third-party ones: scheduling, automatic labelling and notifications are often already there.
Deluge is free and open source.
